Our featured restaurant is The Outback Steakhouse.

Most Outback Steakhouse restaurants have gluten free menus on hand, just ask the hostess. The Main Street, Reynoldsburg restaurant is a big sponsor for our annual golf outing! Please send our thanks to the owner when you go in to eat.

DINING OUT WITH CELIAC

This compilation of restaurants is offered by members of the Gluten Free Gang in good faith. Please keep in mind that restaurant staff and suppliers frequently change and that the individual restaurants on this list have not been evaluated by the Gluten-Free Gang but by individuals whose concerns may vary;  you are encouraged to discuss your dietary needs with the servers, kitchen staff and/or management.

For your convenience we have divided the list into two sections.  The first section lists restaurants that provide a gluten free menu suggesting experience in cooking and serving gluten free meals and that accommodating a gluten free diet is a matter of formal policy as well as practice.   The second section contains restaurants that have provided gluten free meals to individuals in the past.  Their experience and knowledge of gluten free cooking may reflect working with only a few patrons with Celiac and may be influenced by their level of understanding or by other dietary concerns unrelated to Celiac.

Here is a sample dining card text:

I have been medically diagnosed with Celiac Disease.

I have severe reactions to foods which contain wheat, rye, barley, oats or their derivatives.

These may be contained in:

Tenderizers; Marinades; Additives; Caramel Color; Dextrins; Emulsifiers; Flavorings; Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein; Modified Food Starch; Soy Sauce; Beer.

Food Preparation:

I must also be concerned with food preparation.  If my food contacts offending grains, it is contaminated.  Food cooked in the same fryer as breaded foods; meats cooked on the same grill as buns, pancakes, etc. will cause a reaction.  Please use non-porous cookware (non-stick, stainless steel, or cast aluminum) or place aluminum foil on the grill.

Among the many things that I can eat are: corn, rice, potato, soy, tapioca, arrowroot; nuts; most unprocessed fruits and vegetables; fresh chicken, pork and fish; dairy products; seasonings such as salt, pepper, and pure spices and herbs.

Please do not hesitate to ask me any questions regarding the ingredients and/or preparation of my meal.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of my dietary needs.

Notes from emails we received:

2/2008:

BOMA had no problems accommodating me.  They even made the soup of the day with cornstarch & not flour (not because of me).

Due Amici had no problems accommodating me.  I had to make my menu selection at the time of my reservation.

G. Michael's Bistro has said that they would have no problems accommodating me.  I just need to mention that I will be needing gluten-free service at the time that I make the reservation.

I had called Old Bag of Nails because we were supposed to have a family gathering there.  They said that they could accommodate me, and that they had accommodated others.  We didn't actually make it there.

I called Lemon Grass last night, and they told me that they could accomodate a gluten-free/soy-free dinner.  They said that they have made exceptions for people by substituting rice & sauces...
